Responsible Personal Choices
The goal of Smart Character Choices is to help students learn how to make responsible personal choices and be motivated intrinsically rather than extrinsically. We provide training at each school in support of students in daily practice of targeted character elements and starting daily class meetings and other interventions and activities.
Student leaders are trained to teach peers in their school the skills needed to building positive, respectful relationships. The basis of this training comes from the work of Lickona and Davidson in their 2005 publication Smart & Good High Schools report. They listed seven social and emotional skills that are especially important for success in school, work, and beyond. These are: 1) a healthy self-confidence and positive attitude 2) basic courtesy in social situations 3) positive interpersonal relationships that include sensitivity to the feelings of others 4) the ability to communicate effectively 5) the ability to work well with others 6) the capacity to solve conflicts fairly, and 7) emotional intelligence, including self-knowledge and the ability to manage a range of emotions. The student-training program focuses on these skills using an internal control psychology model.
